A DAY TO REMEMBER BAD VIBES WORLD TOUR (Paris)

DISRESPECT YOUR SURROUNDINGS !

(Pics on the bottom of the post and spotify playlist of the setlist *wink wink*)

Ok, how could I not start this post with that more than mythical lyric ?

A long time ago (okay it was 2011, but it feels like forever), A Day To Remember came to the town where I was studying and I even had a ticket BUT a storm was announced and I wasn’t sure I’d have a train back to my folk’s house on the next day (and get that I was barely 20 and absolutely wanted to go back to my parent’s on the week ends) SO, I did the worst thing I could: I didn’t go to the concert. And to this day, I’ve regretted it for every single second.

I got to know ADTR through their album Homesick (which is my favorite album by them, but that’s another topic) and I have been a fan since. I’d never gotten the chance to see them yet, but that all changed when the BAD VIBES WORLD TOUR came through Paris !
Naturally, I went.

And it was CRA-ZY !

There’s nothing like a concert with your best friends (and I’m lucky to have the same tour squad for every concert I go to ❤️) but this one, was one of the craziest in every way !

Where to begin ?

The first two opening acts were Moose Blood and Neck Deep (and god knows I love ‘em UK bands), I’d been listening to Moose Blood ever since Hopeless Records announced their signing, and I’d already seen Neck Deep 2 times with All Time Low 2 years ago during their tour leading to Wembley. And it was good to finally see MB live and see ND again ! But I was of course most excited for ADTR !

6 years had to pass before they finally announced another show in France ! And the wait was worth it !

I was so sad when they didn’t come to present Common Courtesy, but I figured « soon enough they’ll be back » and I was right ! When Bad Vibrations was announced, a new hope rose and allowed me to wish upon a star for a french date. The song was right. « When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you ». I wished for ADTR (and I admit I can guess of a few friends who did too) and they came !

Bad Vibration is the 6th studio album for ADTR, released September 2nd 2016, and with the opening title track, they were setting the tone that they were done taking bullshit from anyone and were recovering from all the troubles they’d had over the years.

I’ve had my share of concerts (even though not as much as I’d like to for now) but believe me: I had never seen, NEVER, such an incredible show and have a band as expected and respected as ADTR has been that night.

The greatest thing in a concert, is when you hear the crowd sing back to the artist on-stage. And when you feel like you’re part of that.

ADTR is known for all its bangers and songs that’ll make you jump in the comfort of your own closeted space so you can bounce off everywhere just to jump and get it all out of your system.
Before the show, I was feeling a little angry for personal reasons, and I needed something to get it all out,  and this was it !

It had been quite a while since I had been at a show and didn’t take my phone out to « capture memories ». But this show was rowdy as hell, and honestly at some point I was laughing nervously cause I felt the crowd was jumping and moving so much that I was moving with it without even really knowing where I was going ! 3 songs in, and I was in the center of the crowd, 2 rows away from the barrier. I didn’t really realize what was happening at first during the beginning of the show cause it was THAT crazy ! I even lost some of my friends (and thank god for mosh pits, I found them a few minutes later).

I’d never heard the crowd sing so loud at a show ! I thought « It’s gonna be like that for a few songs then people will just jump and mosh » but I was more then astonished when I heard the crowd sing back to the band through the WHOLE of it ! Everybody knew the lyrics to every single song ! The band itself looked a bit surprised at first hearing the chants and roars back at them ! I guess it was really worth the wait for everyone there that night !

I could quote an entire post about what special lyric or special moment for that special song I was most excited about but then I’d have to make this post more than a thousand line long (and it’s starting to feel this way, but how can I not ?).

In case you were wondering, here’s the setlist:

  1. Mr Highway’s Thinking About The End
  2. Paranoia
  3. 2nd Sucks
  4. Right Back At It Again
  5. I’m Made Of Wax Larry, What Are You Made Of ?
  6. It’s Complicated
  7. Fast Forward To 2012
  8. We Got This
  9. Bad Vibrations
  10. Exposed
  11. Have Faith In Me
  12. Justified
  13. Homesick
  14. Naivety
  15. All I Want
  16. The Plot To Bomb The Panhandle
  17. If It Means A Lot To You (acoustically by Jeremy and Kevin then full band onstage)
  18. All Signs Point To Lauderdale
  19. The Downfall Of Us All

When the lights went out and the band started the riff to the first song, everybody lost their shit ! Acclamations were part of the song, and when Jeremy started screaming, so did everybody else. When the song came to the middle eight, and suddenly became silent to leave Jeremy blasting with all his energy DISRESPECT YOUR SURROUNDINGS, I knew I was home.

Then came on Paranoia (I’M LIKE A TIME BOMB, TICKING IN YOUR HEAD), 2nd Sucks (where we started spinning round and round in the mosh-pit and I didn’t even know why, I just knew I was following the movement and I was laughing cause it was nervous and it was fun) and on and on.

When the show got to Have Faith In Me, I admit, I held back some tears. Mostly cause this song is my favorite by ADTR, but because the lyrics mean so much to me.
Just think about it, I’m at a concert and the band on-stage is singing « I said I’d never let you go and I never did, I said I’d never let you fall and I always meant it » and I’m with my best friends. How could I not feel emotional ?!

Moving on, Naivety had the band throw beach balls at us, and people in the room crowd-surfing. LITERALLY. They had us have one person as the board and the other on top and pretend surfing toward the stage ! Plus Neck Deep came on stage too, and threw toilet-paper at us ! It was MADNESS !

All I Want is a classic, whose lyrics, yet again, tend to describe exactly how most of us in our generation feel. « All I want is a place to call my own, to mend the hearts of everyone who feels alone, WHOA, you know to keep your hopes up high and your head down low ». Same Jeremy, same. And thank you for providing that better and safer place in your songs and words !

The perfect encore song was obviously a song where it starts acoustically and it’s just two members of the band on-stage, then comes the full band, and If It Means A Lot To You is perfect for that !

Of course All Signs Point To Lauderdale is a big « FUCK YOU » to the town that held you down during all these years and I think somehow we all have a little bit of that in us, that one special place that unfortunately keeps us down or reminds us of tough times.

Finally, the song everybody was expecting and knew meant it was really over this time: The Downfall Of Us All. Before the band could even start it, everybody was already chanting « DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH… DUH… DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH… DUH DUH DUH. DUH. DUH DUH DUH. DUH DUH » (if you tell me you didn’t sing it in your head, then you definitely should listen to the song and DUH-DUH-DUH along, you’ll see, it’s fun).

The whole song in itself is a HUGE anthem to leaving everything behind to follow your true passion. And I’m glad they did ! Cause if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have someone to write angsty lyrics and songs to help me cope with my angry-self.

THANK YOU A Day To Remember, for letting me know it’s okay to be angry sometimes, and most of all, for this awesome show you put on !
